The Merry Go Round

Well, it has turned out to be too crazy of a week to get my new buttons up and Mr. Linky is not working right this week, so that will be delayed.

I am pushing the envelope in getting my reviews up but plan to have them up by Sunday sometime.

I am speaking briefly (very briefly) this weekend in front of about 150 at my church. I am a little freaked out about that.

Having Thanksgiving dinner with my small group tonight and have to make a couple dishes.

Volunteering in my son's class in the morning.

I was out every single night this week and have not been able to work out once because of various meetings and appointments.

Ahhh! Calgon take me away. I cannot wait for the holiday weekend and this merry go round to just stop for a couple days.

All in all, everything I am doing is fun, enjoyable and a blessing in my life. It just all is happening at once this week.

The Coupon Game

Do you all play the coupon game? You know, where you clip and save and run around town getting double and triple savings on food that is on sale?

I do this a bit. Not as much as some, but every once in awhile I save big time!

What is it with these drug stores on every corner anyway? We have like 7 in our small town.
Oh, I digress.

So, they had Duracell batteries on sale. Well, with Christmas coming up and electronics galore we go through some batteries.

I know - use the rechargeable ones.

I use both.

Anyway, they had Duracell batteries on sale.
I had 5.75 worth of coupons.
I bought $20.97 worth of batteries. One pack even came with some free ear buds.

I used my coupons which brought the total to $15.22.
And if you spend $20 on Duracell batteries this week you get $15.00 in Extra Care Bucks back!

Which is basically cash in my pocket to buy prescriptions, shampoo, deodorant, razors and all that stuff.

So, I paid 22 cents for about 24 Duracell batteries. Oh, oh and 8 of them were Digital Batteries!

Cool, huh? That is practically free!

Okay, yeah - it's the little thing in life that make me happy.

Official Tattletale

Well, B got her first job as Class President today.

She received an official yellow sticky pad.

When she sees someone acting out of line, she is to write their name on a page of the pad and stick it on her teacher's desk.

Basically, she is the official tattletale of the class.

Hubby said, "Well, it's a good thing they already voted for you because I don't think you'll be making many friends now!"

Apparently all to be done undercover. Umm'Kay.

Josh Hamilton and company

I had the privilege of attending a concert at my very own church last night of longtime Christian group Philips, Craig and Dean. They are working with Josh Hamilton to help kickoff his new Triple Play Ministries.

Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers. Have you heard his story? If not, where have you been? Remember The Home Run Derby from this summer?

We need more heroes like this.

He has a new book out if you want to read more about him. I got 3 signed copies last night!!!! Hmmm, I wonder who the lucky 3 will be to get those for Christmas?

He spoke with PC&D and our pastor, gave away tons of Rangers autographed baseballs, t-shirts, caps, posters, etc. He is very cool and fun-loving. His wife and kids are absolutely precious.

He is speaking again at church tomorrow and I can't wait to hear from him again.

The concert was great. They play great worship music.

They have a new album. And oh my, those guys are funny! I did not know they were all Senior Pastors of their own churches and are back there each weekend to preach. Wow - busy guys.

I See The Future

The future of the next week or so.

Well, it's only 8 am here and I just finished putting Batman "tattoos" all over Bubby's arms. He seems pretty inspired to get to school now and show his friends his new ink. It's really such a simple thing but makes him very happy.

Speaking of simple, let us talk about something not so simple. Mr. Linky and FeedFlare. For me anyway.

For some of you, this may be simple. I am just technically challenged and learn best by trial and error, so I have been playing around a bit with them. Of course, this all happens in between putting tats on my kids and feeding them. Basically, I cannot read or understand all this computer code stuff in my templates and am terrified I will mess it all up somehow.

I do have some fun new things to introduce this next week, though (if I can figure out Mr. Linky). Jo-Lynne made me some new buttons so I can host some carnivals! Oh, they are soooooo completely cute.

So, I'm excited about that aaannnnddd, she just might be (okay she is) decorating my blog for Christmas. Yay! So, I am kind of already decorating for Christmas - just not my actual house. I can't bring myself to do that until Thanksgiving is over. Even if it is late this year.

I've got a couple reviews coming up also on some great kids books: a series for the younger ones and one for older girsls/tweens that B just finished.

Speaking of B, she is turning 8 on Monday.

Her birthday list is just a little huge including both a Nintendo DS, an iPod and new bike. No, she is absolutely not getting all of those things.

But we are not having a big party this year. $100 can buy a party or go toward the DS. Doing both is not really a good choice right now. Especially with Christmas right around the corner. You should see her Christmas list and no she is not getting everything on that either.

Anyway, this is the first in her young 8 years of life that we are not having an actual birthday party. We will still have a family celebration this weekend, though!

First Dog?

I am a dog LOVER.

But I am seriously undecided on this being the new First Dog for Obama's girls. They need a fuzzy, soft, furry dog.

I am thinking a mutt is really the most "American" choice. Of course, Obama is all about changing things up, so it might be the right choice for them. With the allergy thing I can understand. We have the same problem.

So do what we did, GET A MALTESE! They are hypo-allergenic with HAIR.

Just try to train it not to pee in the oval office. They like oriental rugs for some reason.

Okay, so new random things about me....hmmm.

1. I love snow days. I like the unexpectedness (is that a word?) of being able to cancel the days events, hang out with the fam, have a fire and drink hot chocolate. We just don't get very many of these in North Carolina.

2. I love love love my dog. Buddy - he is a Maltese and sits right on my lap as I blog, answer emails, Facebook, Twitter. He follows me everywhere, sleeps right on my pillow and is incredibly soft. Maltese are great dogs: One of the oldest breeds around, don't shed and are considered hyp0-allergenic. They are not the easiest to train, though. Good thing he is as cute as he can be.

3. I have hazel eyes. They turn very green when I am angry. Weird, but true. Not that I get angry. Much.

4. I secretly wish I was a dancer - like ballroom dancing. I hope to get Hubby to take lessons one day with me.

5. I kinda like constructive criticism. Except from Hubby. :)

6. I cried at High School Musical 3.

7. I like to get all dressed up. I love to be made up, hair done, nails manicured, but you are more likely to find me completely the opposite. And I am totally okay with that.

I started this post this past Saturday - finished this morning.

Whew - I just got back from a great exercise class at my gym called Go Wild! It was wild indeed! It was in the gymnasium of my gym and at least 150-200 people in the class and a DJ.

Not like a DJ who introduces the Electric Slide at a wedding, but a real DJ like that girl who is "good friends" with Lindsey Lohan.

I like the Electric Slide. I'm just sayin'.

Anyway, about 7 different instructors took turns with various routines involving my favorite workout of choice, kickboxing, and some body conditioning.

All of the other instructors were in the audience getting everyone pumped up and motivated.

By the time it was all said and done, the room was just excited. The vibe was energetic and fun.

As they all stood on stage and finished our cool down with us, I strongly desired to be one of them. They looked like they were having a great time and were probably a good team. Or it might have been the endorphins.

Now in order for me to be an exercise instructor, I would have to stop eating Halloween candy in copious amounts, might need to get some sort of training or education and maybe have started all of this few years before I turned 38.

Before you send me emails, saying "You can do it!", let me say this. It's not that I couldn't do it IF I were really passionate about exercise and health. But the reality is, I am not as passionate as what it would most likely take for me to attain that goal of being an amazing exercise instructor. I like exercise a lot. I like to stay healthy. But it's not like I think about teaching kickboxing all the time or have this burning desire to lead a step class.

So, why today? Why did I find myself thinking it would be so cool to be one of them now?

Well, this is what I think. I do that sometimes. Stick with me, though.

One of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is love/belonging.

Oh yeah, I am about to be all psychological on you here on the ole' blog. I looked this up on the Internet, so it must be true. No really, I remember studying this in middle school. So, that's why it must be true.

I get so side tracked - sorry.

So, Maslow's theory on this is:

Humans need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance, whether it comes
from a large social group, such as clubs, office culture, church groups,
professional organizations, sports teams, gangs("Safety in
numbers"), or small social connections (family members, intimate
partners, mentors, close colleagues, confidants)

Speaking of middle school - how important is it to belong to a group then? Wow, that can be a rough time trying to find out where you belong. I can tell you that by high school, I wanted to be a part of a certain group so badly, that I made many bad decisions just to belong.

So, I think that's it. That is what I saw that made me momentarily want to be a part of their group. I saw a community. A group. A club. A gang of people that wanted to kill me with exercise. And they were cool and fun!

Well, I not going to be a part of that exercise instructor community. I can talk with them, I even can be friends with the one who has a daughter in my daughter's class. But I don't think they will be inviting me to come to a staff meeting or lead a class anytime soon.

In the last couple years being in community has become even more important to me as I had kids. I like being a part of a group of moms that have children the same age. We can share in our successes and struggles. I joined MOPS for 5 years to have that community. It was vital to me not becoming a complete mess of a mother. If you are a new mom and are lonely at home -find yourself a MOPS or MOMS group today. They say that stay-at-home moms are some of the loneliest groups of women around and plays a huge factor in post-partum depression.

Since I have left MOPS, I have become a part of not one, not even two, but three other groups. One is a couples group, one is a women's group at my church and the other is a women's book club in my neighborhood. They are like food to my soul. The love and fun from the people in these groups absolutely get me through life.

So what makes a group successful?

Well, high on the list is another one of Maslow's needs - -safety.

For me, I must feel safe in a group to share my life. I am an extravert and I process my feelings by speaking them. If I did not trust the people in any one of my groups, I would not be in them.

Personally, I think it is important to establish this up front.

Fun - the people I hang out with must be fun and not take themselves or others too seriously. In my couples group there is not much that is off limits that we talk about it - our poor kids, the stories we share about them. We were laughing so hard last week, I was crying.

A common goal: One of my groups reads all kinds of books, comes together to share the details of that book, dessert, wine or coffee and a night out of the house.

The other two groups I am in study the bible, share in meals, serve our community and take care of each other when needed.

I have said this before on this blog and really do believe this is true whether you are more of an introverted shy person or a put it all out there extravert.

People were not created to be alone. I recently heard a guy at a conference say, God himself is community - three in one.

We often start reading the bible at the fall of man, but what about starting it where he creates man and then creates a helpmate so man would not be alone. Everything was good that God created - but he said this one thing, "It is not good for man to be alone."

Just look at blogging. Here is another community all in itself. Every morning, I wake up and check Twitter and Facebook - all to be connected to other people. I don't even know most of these people! But I sure like being connected to them.

Yep, that's right. That's the big secret! A group of bloggers are teaming up with Soles4Souls to give away 50,000 pairs of shoes in 50 days! You can be a part of this, too!

A few months ago, my daughter came home with a school project. It was to find a closet full of shoes, separate them into groups, count them and graph them. She chose our coat closet that had a basket full of shoes we run around in outside.

There was more, but I will spare you the details. Just right there in one basket were over 25 pairs of shoes and didn't even include our own personal closets.
I remember thinking at the time, "we have so much."

Fast forward another month to our local Clothing Swap and I stood over the most massive amount of shoes I have ever seen in one place. People were just giving away shoes to others in our community. Hundreds and hundreds of shoes.
I said to a friend, "Nobody on this earth should be without shoes. We have enough shoes just here to outfit a small country."

"It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unworn shoes
lying in their closets while over 300 million children around the world have
never owned a pair of shoes. This is an opportunity to "Step Up" and to help
Soles4Souls with their mission of "Changing the World, One Pair at a Time"

Then about a week and a half ago, our Compassion child, Fabrizzo sent a new photo. A photo of himself with his new tennis shoes on that he bought with the birthday money we sent him.

Finally, a call out on Anne Jackson's blog to join in something that would be HUGE. All I had to do to be a part of it was just say yes. I almost ignored the post, but something told me to say yes.

So, I said yes, she emailed me the information about the 50,000 shoe challenge and here we are. Sometimes a message just needs to come in various ways before I finally get the hint!

Finally, now my crazy shoe buying habit can actually be a good thing!

Your Music sells all of it's CD's for 6.99. Yes, I still buys CDs. I do download some music, but still prefer the actual CD.

My friend makes the most awesome jewelry. I have several of her pieces and can tell you that she is one of the most special women I know. Presence Jewelry

Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer is hosting her weekly Works For Me Wednesday carnival with a theme this week. Favorite toys - time tested.

So, these are our favorites right now.

My kids are 4 and almost 8.

I am giving my review of these just cause we like them. Maybe you will too.

Action Figures: My son really seems to play with all of them most of the time. He has A.Lot.

But brings them out and plays with them for minutes. He does nothing much longer than that. Right now he is really into the Star Wars Clone Wars ones. He is into anything Star Wars right now actually.

Webkinz: My kids would spend hours if I would let them playing the games and caring for their pets online.

Books: My daughter goes through a book every couple days. She loves them! She is loving this new series Secret Keeper Girl and also really enjoys classics like The Secret Garden and Charlotte's Web.

Drawing, art, crayons, markers, stickers: She also loves to create. She really likes the Blendy pens right now.

Games: Especially Cranium games

Big Wheel: By far, this is my son's favorite thing to do. It has a flat tire and a new one is on his Christmas list.

Speaking of President...

My B is running for Class President. Of her second grade class.

Okay, how cute is that?

She wrote a speech a couple weeks ago and along with about 10 other kids told the class why she would be a great class president.

She said she would help her classmates if they had questions, help recycle in the classroom, have a suggestion box for her classmates and assist her teacher by leading by example of good behavior.

Her and a little boy won the nominations and they have been campaigning for a week. They were each assigned a campaign team to make signs, buttons and slogans. Sound familiar?

Her slogan was B - The Right Woman for Change. Yes. Yes, it was.

One of the little guys on her campaign team told her that he would be voting for the boy running against her and she quickly informed him that she did want anyone on her team that was not voting for her. He has since changed his mind - or so he told her. Fear, maybe?

We printed out stickers for her this morning to take to school and she wrote out compliments for each of her classmates on index cards. She thought instead of handing out candy like some of the other candidates are doing, she would hand out encouragement with her stickers that say,

"B.R.B. Vote For Me!"

She. Is. Special.

Today is the voting. She will know by the time she leaves school who the new class president will be. I will have a happy girl or a very sad one when she gets off the bus today.

So, we said a prayer this morning that went something like this:

"Lord, we know that this election is in your hands now. We have done all
the work we can. It is up to the voters now to cast a vote that will end
up doing what is best for the entire classroom - not just one. We hope that
all we did was glorifying to you and that you will give us peace in the event
that B is not the winner. We hope that if she is, that you would help her to be
gracious to her opponent and grateful to those who voted for her for we know it
is a privilege to be voted into any office by your peers. Thank you for the opportunity to try"

Hmmm. Ya' think I might have had my mind on another election?

Maybe a little, but I do know how sensitive she is and that if she doesn't win it will be hard for her to be strong. So, I felt the little prayer would help her get through it.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted!
